The so-called Northern City is a cluster of large housing estates built on the outskirts of Prague, Czech Republic, between the 1960s and 1980s. Even though the area is slowly undergoing modernisation, it has not been gentrified yet. At first glance, what stands out in this neighbourhood is the sometimes bizarre looking combination of aging storefronts, old-school pubs, discount stores, and casinos, all set against a backdrop of stark communist-era architecture. Rather than focusing on these visual contrasts, I chose to create a more personal interpretation of the suburban landscape – dystopian, alienating, and seemingly deserted.
